Selain itu, Quaid pun punya beberapa sahabat baik di tempat kerja. Tampaknya Quaid tidak punya masalah serius dalam hidupnya terkecuali pada tiap malam ia mengalami mimpi aneh tentang planet tetangga kita yang berwarna merah, apalagi kalau bukan Mars. Anehnya mimpinya sering sama dan menyangkut seorang wanita yang sama pula dan jelas bukan istrinya. Walau Lori dan sahabatnya berusaha menyakinkan bahwa mimpinya hanyalah bunga tidur belaka, namun Quaid merasa ada sesuatu di balik mimpi tersebut.

Lantaran ingin menemukan lebih banyak tentang mimpinya itu, maka Quaid pun pergi ke perusahaan Total Rekall, Inc. untuk membeli sebuah paket perjalanan virtual ke Mars. Ketika telah sadar, ia telah berada di taksi yang menuju ke apartemennya.

Tentu saja Quaid dibuat bingung dengan kejadian yang baru dialaminya. Tetapi hal itu bukan apa-apa karena istrinya, Lori dan teman-teman sekerjanya serta sekelompok orang tidak dikenalnya tiba-tiba ingin membunuhnya. Lori dan teman-teman itu ternyata di bawah perintah seorang pria kejam dan berbahaya, Richter (Michael Ironside). Yang lebih aneh, Quaid menemukan sebuah disk yang berisi video dirinya karena sosok dirinya yang tampil di layar menyatakan Quaid bukanlah Quaid sebenarnya. Quaid tidak punya pilihan lain karena ia telah membunuh Lori yang telah berubah total menjadi sosok asing baginya, sehingga menjadi buronan pihak berwajib. Di samping itu, Quaid pun penasaran apa yang terjadi sebenarnya di Mars dan apa kaitannya dengan dirinya. Di Mars, kembali lagi Quaid menjadi buruan kelompok Richter yang ternyata adalah para agen rahasia yang tunduk pada Coohagen (Ronny Cox), diktator Mars yang tidak kenal belas kasihan. Hanya yang bisa membantu Quaid adalah kelompok pemberontak yang salah satu pemimpinnya ternyata adalah wanita yang selalu berada dalam mimpinya, Melina (Rachel Ticotin).
